Michigan business challenges community to 'Do Something'

Grassroots campaign launched to spark positive action.

By asking the hypothetical question "If you could do anything today, what would you do?" a local Michigan business, Beach Communications, hopes to become a catalyst to positive change in our community.

Respondents are invited to express their hopes and dreams at www. Do Something Blog .com.

The challenge put forward is intended to get our community to turn talk into positive action. And through the community generated by the blog, others will be able to offer suggestions of how participants can accomplish their objective.

“It's all about impacting behavior,” said Rex Smith, Managing Partner of Beach Communications. "The focus should not be on negative times, but on how we can create positive things."

Smith is no stranger to walking the talk. In 2002, Smith and his wife, Sue started a learn-to-read program in the Detroit Public School System. At Mason Elementary school , "at risk" students participating in their Hand-in-Hand Foundation's program have improved their reading scores by 100%.

In addition to hosting the blog, the DoSomething team plans to look for trends in the "Do's" and publish a synopsis of the findings – which may range from hopes and dreams, to commitments and motivations.

“There are no right or right or wrong answers.” assures Tom Szczepanski, Managing Director of Beach. “We're hoping that by the simple act of writing the ideas down, a spark will be ignited to accomplish something positive."

Smith added, "If we can be a catalyst to making something positive happen in our community – anything positive, we will consider the investment of time and energy worthwhile."

Awareness for the campaign will be gained through a grass-roots e-mails, an outdoor board (located on Woodward north of 9 Mile Road ), and public relations partnerships.
